Applications due May 1, 2025
The IAS offers an annual student research grant in memory of Douglas Jones’ significant contributions to Iowa archaeology and history. IAS seeks to support projects advancing areas of research Doug was most passionate about, including but not limited to paleoethnobotany, collaboration and consultation with American Indian Tribes, and the Underground Railroad, but all Iowa topics, historic or prehistoric, involving archaeological research will be considered.
This research grant program is available to undergraduate or graduate students from any institution as long as they are studying topics of Iowa archaeology and history. If no viable student applications are received in a cycle, the grant is available to IAS members for research projects. The IAS Grant award shall not exceed $1000 in any single year. Grant funds may be used from May 15, 2025 to May 15, 2026.
This grant program can be used to fund archaeological and historical research including: lab analysis fees, field school fees, radiometric dating, publication fees, travel to archives, and similar costs. Conference registration fees and travel expenses to present research results are eligible—however, conference costs require 1:1 matching funds (identify match source in your budget, it can be personal funds) and may not exceed 50 percent of the grant request. This fund does not support time/wages of the applicant to conduct research.
All qualified student grant applicants will receive a 1-year complimentary IAS membership!
