2024 Spring Meeting

Save the date for April 27, 2024, for the Iowa Archeological Society annual spring meeting! This year’s events will take place in northeast Iowa. We will hold morning presentations at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre in Marquette, Iowa. IAS is partnering with Effigy Mounds National Monument for an afternoon field trip – see details below!

Registration

You do not have to be an IAS member to register for the meeting, but we encourage you to join.

  • Online: Pay in advance here or click ADD TO CART below. Choose the number of registrations and click ADD TO CART. Then VIEW CART. Add the names of the registrants to the ADDITIONAL INFORMATION field at the bottom of the page.
  • By mail: Watch for a mailer, coming soon.
  • In person: Register Friday evening or Saturday morning of the conference. Cash, check accepted.

Please consider presenting your research or activities to the membership at the meeting! Topics can relate to archaeology, history, anthropology, and similar disciplines of interest to IAS members. If interested, please e-mail the IAS president with your name and contact information, as well as the topic/tentative title.

Weekend Details

Meeting: Saturday, April 27, 2024; registration opens at 8:30 am
Place: Driftless Area Wetlands Centre, 509 US Hwy 18, Marquette, IA
Cost: $10 per person. Register in advance online or via mail or pay via cash/check at the door.
Saturday Lunch: On your own. See area restaurants.
Souvenirs: The IAS will have a selection of coffee mugs, tote bags, zip pouches, buttons, and magnets available for sale at the meeting. Preview these items or order online from the Iowa Archeological Society collection at the Threadless Iowa Archaeology store!
Nearby Hotels: A block of hotels is reserved at the Cobblestone Inn for Friday/Saturday nights at a rate of $160/night (normal rates start at $180/night). See other area hotels.
Field Trip: Guided tour of Sny Magill Unit, Effigy Mounds National Monument. The Sny Magill unit is owned and managed by the National Park Service (NPS) as part of Effigy Mounds National Monument and protects more than 100 Native American burial and ceremonial mounds. The lands bordering the Sny Magill unit are owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Following the lunch break, drivers can caravan to Sny Magill, about 12 miles south of the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre. The guided tour will be 1-1.5 hours on a flat trail of dirt/gravel/wood chips. People should wear sturdy shoes and a hat and be aware that tick season is already underway. A motorized wheelchair should be able to make the trail unless the trail is very muddy.
